SeaWorld staff develops a brace to help a whale diagnosed with scoliosis. TODAY.com's Dara Brown talks with a SeaWorld veterinarian about the whale's treatment.
SeaWorld Orlando's Animal Rescue Team is using a custom orthopedic brace to care for a once-stranded pilot whale. The whale suffers from scoliosis that prevents her from swimming normally.
Dr. Scott Gearhart, a senior veterinarian at SeaWorld Orlando, says the rescue team worked with a local orthopedic group to develop the custom-fitting brace. Gearhart admits, "This is the first time we've tried a device like this on such a large animal."
Team members are hoping to see results within a few months.
